“The miracle of light pours over the green and brown expanse of saw grass and of water, shining and slowly moving, the grass and water that is the meaning and the central fact of the Everglades. It is a river of grass.”     Marjory Stoneman Douglas

With the Everglades as my stimulus, my work explores the territory between abstraction and both interior and exterior environments. I play with spatial relations by intersecting soft atmospheric abstraction with hard-edged architectural forms.

Still housing prehistoric monsters such as the Tarpon and Horseshoe crab, the Everglades has the power to transform time. This unique place holds secrets that begin to show the more time spent there. The horizon line disappears into the distance, and the water and sky become one creating a feeling of being completely enveloped.

My paintings are about my interpretation of this world with the Everglades as the primordial landscape from which all life formed.  Through the processing of natural forces and a high degree of kinesthetic energy created in my studio practice, I maintain an intensity, which is translated into reworked surfaces.

I use open gesture to describe the life and energy found in the Everglades. I am interested in compositional challenges, as well as challenges from materials. The Everglades acts as a lens through which to discuss nature and abstraction creating a jumping off point for my visual vignettes.
